Chapter Seven

“So, what do you want this blog to be about?” Perry was examining his nails. They were glittery silver and completely distracting.

“Teenager stuff, I guess,” Maps said.

They were in Maps’ room, Perry sitting on the floor in front of Maps’ stand-up mirror and Maps sitting in his computer chair, staring blankly at the blog form box on screen.

“If you don’t even know what to write about, why bother?”

“Because it’s a thing I should do. To, you know, experience teenage things.”

“People don’t even blog anymore. There are apps for that. And by that, I mean apps where you take pictures of your butt or your face in the bathroom mirror.”

Maps cringed. “Why would I want to do that?”

Perry clicked his tongue and looked at Maps in the mirror’s reflection. “You’re so 2006. Fine, just write about feelings or something.”

“I am feeling kind of chilly.”

“Cute.”

“Are you going to college?”

“Of course. You think I’d miss out on college boys?” Perry’s laugh was almost manic. “Pure madness!”

“I don’t know what I’m going to do.”

Perry turned to glance at Maps over his shoulder. “I figured the government would’ve stolen you away by now to do tests on you in Area 51.”

“I guess I just expected something to happen. And now nothing’s happened and everyone else is going off to college and I have no idea what I’m going to do.”

“Where’s Lane going?”

Even the mention of Lane moving away made Maps’ heart drop. “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?”

“I haven’t asked him.”

“Do you two not talk? What do you do when you hang out? Leave nothing out.” He swung his body around to face Maps. “I want all the gory details.”

Unlike Benji, Perry had no shame prying into Maps’ personal life.

“We, uh, watch movies. Or go for walks. Or toss around a ball. We talk a lot, and laugh even more. We crashed a party last weekend.”

“You went to a party without me?” Perry whined.

“We’re getting sidetracked.” Maps leaned in closer to the monitor, willing the pixels of the screen to magically rearrange themselves into profound tales of his life.

“Just write about college or something. Like, how you haven’t applied anywhere and will likely live with your parents forever. Or on Benji’s sofa.”

He tapped a finger against his chin, pondering Perry’s suggestion. It was perfect, really. College. He’d blog about college and how incredibly terrible the notion of going to it was.
